Winter Setting In

Our winter is not here yet but fall is, and where I live in Idaho, it is too cold outside for orchids. The cymbidiums like it cooler but not too cool, so down to 45-50 degrees is about all they will take. We bring everything inside for winter and so our supplies are a little lower due to space and room. However, inside you can keep your orchids at a warm temperature for the winter and let it be cooler at night in your house. I used to keep my orchids out in the greenhouse all winter with heat on. That was a lot of money to heat a greenhouse. So, now I just downsize for winter and keep them inside with me. Plus, when they were outside in the greenhouse, I’d run outside regularly to check the heat. You just don’t get much sleep when your orchid babies are outside and you’re inside in a controlled environment. I also keep back up propane heating because an outage would ruin my collection and my orchid supply. So, prepare for winter while you still have time. Remember to always water with warm water. Cold water shocks the orchid roots, especially in the cold weather.
