How to Care For Coelogyne Orchids

Coelogyne orchids have small delicate blooms, are fragrant, and can grow quickly and become very large if you allow them.

I use both moss and small media in my pots for Coelogyne orchids. I put leca at the bottom, a small layer, sphagnum moss around the roots and fill the pot with medium media that has leca mixed in for keeping air pockets. Coelogynes come from overseas and we often put them in just sphagnum moss for a month or two to get their roots back up to working order. They are often in boxes for ten to fourteen days and that is very hard on them.

Coelogyne orchids can be overwatered just like all other orchids. So, if you see the pseudo bulbs turning yellow, check to make sure it is not too wet. If so, remove it from the pot and let it sit in a larger pot for several days until it drys out a bit. Coelogyne orchids are fairly easy to work with but like all orchids, too much heat, too much cold, too much moss, or too much water, can kill them quickly. They also love humidity and take in water through their leaves like all orchids. Put them in the bathroom and let them get steam moisture (not directly in the shower, but in the shower area), or buy a humidifier. Do not let them dry out, keep them damp or moist. We water several times a week in the summer while they are outside. Inside they will dry out quickly with the heat. Keep a close eye on them, nurture them, and they will bloom and grow into grand showpieces.
