Bc. Hippodamia x C. Small World — Care Guide
Light: Bright, indirect light. Provide strong morning or late-afternoon sun but avoid harsh midday rays that scorch leaves. A south- or east-facing window with sheer protection or filtered greenhouse light is ideal. Leaf color should be a deep, healthy green (not yellow or dark olive).
Temperature: Intermediate to warm. Daytime 70–85°F, nighttime 55–65°F. Protect from temperatures below 50°F and from sudden drafts.
Humidity & Airflow: Maintain 50–70% humidity. Use trays, humidifiers, or groupings of plants to raise humidity, and ensure good air movement to prevent rot and fungal problems.
Watering: Water thoroughly when the medium begins to dry but before pseudobulbs become wrinkled—typically once weekly in active growth, less in cooler/winter periods. Allow excess water to drain; do not leave the plant sitting in standing water.
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer (20-20-20 or similar) at quarter to half strength weekly during active growth. Reduce to monthly at half strength during slower growth or winter months.
Potting Medium & Repotting: Use a well-draining mix such as medium-grade fir bark with perlite or charcoal. Repot every 2–3 years or when the medium decomposes, preferably after flowering when new growths are emerging.
Blooming & Aftercare: After flowering, trim spent flower spikes back to a healthy node if applicable, and continue regular care to encourage next season’s growth. Provide a slight seasonal drop in nighttime temperature (5–10°F) in autumn to help initiate spikes.
Pests & Problems: Watch for scale, mealybugs, and spider mites; treat early with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap. Prevent root rot by ensuring good drainage and appropriate watering. Leaf yellowing may indicate overwatering or nutrient imbalance.
By maintaining bright filtered light, steady warmth, good humidity, and careful watering, Bc. Hippodamia x C. Small World will reward you with robust growth and elegant blooms.
