Cattleya schilleriana × sib (4" pot) — Care Guide
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Provide morning sun or filtered light; avoid harsh midday sun that can scorch leaves.
Aim for 2,000–3,000 foot-candles equivalent: leaves should be a medium to light green.
Temperature & Humidity
Day: 70–85°F; Night: 55–65°F. Moderate diurnal variation helps encourage growth and future flowering.
Maintain 50–70% relative humidity. Use a humidity tray or room humidifier if indoor air is dry.
Watering & Potting
Water thoroughly, allowing potting mix to drain completely. Let the top 1/3 of the mix dry slightly between waterings.
In active growth, water more frequently; reduce watering in cooler months or during dormancy.
Use a fast-draining mix (fir bark, perlite, charcoal). Repot every 2–3 years or when media breaks down.
Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer (20-20-20 or similar) at 1/4–1/2 strength every 1–2 weeks during active growth.
Flush with plain water monthly to prevent salt buildup. Reduce feeding in winter or slow-growth periods.
Airflow & Cultural Notes
Good air circulation prevents fungal issues—use a fan if necessary.
Watch for pests: mealybugs, scale, and spider mites. Treat early with appropriate horticultural sprays or manual removal.
Flower spikes often emerge from pseudobulbs; allow spent blooms to fade naturally before trimming.
Flowering
Provide consistent light and a modest drop in night temperature to encourage bloom. With attentive care, expect showy, fragrant flowers typical of Cattleya schilleriana hybrids.
