Care Guide — Grcym. Lovely Melody ‘Pixar’
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Provide morning sun or filtered light; avoid prolonged hot afternoon sun that can scorch leaves.
Aim for about 2,000–4,000 foot-candles (bright shade to light filtered through a sheer curtain). Leaves should be medium green—too dark indicates insufficient light; yellow or bleached leaves indicate excess.
Temperature
Day: 65–75°F (18–24°C). Night: 50–60°F (10–16°C).
A nighttime drop of about 10–15°F helps initiate and set spikes. Avoid extended exposure below 45°F or above 85°F.
Watering
Keep the mix evenly moist while the plant is actively growing; allow the top 10–20% of the potting media to dry between waterings.
Reduce frequency slightly after flowering as growth slows, but do not let the pseudobulbs shrivel.
Use tepid, low-salt water when possible (rainwater, distilled, or filtered tap). Water early in the day so foliage dries before night.
Humidity & Air Movement
Aim for 40–60% relative humidity. Higher humidity (60–70%) is beneficial during growth and blooming if air movement is good.
Provide gentle air circulation to prevent fungal issues and keep the plant healthy.
Potting Mix & Repotting
Use a free-draining mix suitable for Cymbidiums: chunky bark combined with perlite, charcoal, or coarse orchid mix to maintain airflow around the roots.
Repot every 2–3 years or when the mix breaks down or plants become root-bound. Best repotting time: immediately after flowering and before new spring growth starts.
Fertilizing
Feed with a balanced water-soluble orchid fertilizer (20-20-20 or similar) at quarter to half strength every 1–2 weeks during active growth.
In late summer and fall, switch to a higher-potassium formulation to encourage flowering (e.g., 10-30-20) and reduce nitrogen as spikes form.
Flush the pot medium monthly by watering thoroughly to prevent salt buildup.
Blooming & Spike Care
Spikes form on mature pseudobulbs; maintain cooler nights and a stable watering/fertilizer routine to encourage flowering.
Support heavy inflorescences with stakes if needed. Remove spent blooms to tidy the plant; cut spent spikes only after they yellow and dry.
Pests & Disease
Inspect regularly for scale, mealybugs, spider mites, and slugs. Treat early with horticultural oil, insecticidal soap, or targeted systemic treatments if needed.
Good air circulation and proper watering reduce risk of root rot and fungal disease.
Display Tips
Show Grcym. Lovely Melody ‘Pixar’ in a bright room away from direct afternoon sun, or in a sheltered outdoor spot during mild weather.
